Halifax and Journey's End

We woke on Thursday for our final ride to low clouds and fog. The ride from The Head of Jeddore, where we had stayed at a great German-Canadian country inn, to Halifax was only 33 miles but it was mostly along the highway with very little shoulder, so it was a bit nerve wracking at times. There was a great five mile section of a greenway trail through the woods, however, which was wonderful. All along the way a local family had made and displayed various wooded statues of local wildlife and birds.

The sister cities of Dartmouth and Halifax sit across Halifax Harbour from each other. We entered from the Dartmouth side and crossed the iconic MacDonald bridge to get to downtown Halifax. The entire harbor however, was socked in with fog and we could not even see the city as we crossed the bridge! The clouds would not lift for us until the next day, when we could finally really see the city.
Below is a video of our day in Halifax:
We have now completed the tour - Montreal to Halifax, Canada. From Montreal along the St Lawrence River to Quebec City; pushing north along the river to Riviere-du-Loup; traveling east, up and over the crest of Maine into New Brunswick; down and across that province through Fredricton to Moncton; across to Prince Edward Island to Charlottetown; across the Northumberland Strait to Nova Scotia; up and around Cape Breton Island via the Cabot Trail; and now to Halifax, on Nova Scotia's eastern coast. We rode 1,400 miles and climbed over 57,000 feet in just 31days of cycling.

It has been an amazing tour, maybe our favorite. We had just about every kind of weather (except snow): rain, wind, cold, fog, sun, and warmth. We watched the last of winter fade into the new greens of early Spring; and finally, the explosion of new foliage and flowers transforming the landscape into early Summer. We have unplugged from the chaos of the world and got in touch with a simpler life and have found it to be very good. We have also a new appreciation for our northern neighbor, Canada and her people. They are hard working, kind, friendly, and accepting of cultures and each other.
Andy and I have now completed three of these long cycling journeys. Each time I am amazed at how compatible we are together. I feel so fortunate to have such an amazing husband, partner and friend to share these experiences with. I can't wait to do another one! Perhaps another return to Canada?
