Rested and Ready to Glide along the Via Rhôna

Updated: 7 days ago

Day 25 – Lyon to Tournon-sur-Rhône, France — 66 miles. We had a great couple of days off in Lyon! We ate—then ate again—and ate some more. Lyon is known as one of the best foodie cities in the world, and now we understand why. It’s also a wonderful place to walk, with gorgeous parks and intriguing architecture. The hilltops around Lyon offer amazing views, and on a clear day you can see the European Alps. We had a blast staying here, and it’s a city we’d love to return to someday.
We did have to cut our stay by one day because a fast-approaching and concerning weather pattern was on the way, and we wanted to get ahead of it.

Rested, we set off for what has been one of the longest rides of the tour so far. Fortunately, much of the route follows the Via Rhôna, a designated bikeway that stretches from just outside Lyon to Avignon. We’ll be riding this bikeway for the next three days, and from what we’ve seen so far, it’s a dreamlike ride—along the river, through pristine countryside, small villages, vineyards, and farmland. It’s also very flat, and with the wind at your back, the ride starts to feel more like gliding.
We arrived in Tournon-sur-Rhône on a Monday, which—of course—means there were limited dinner options. We did find a great little French restaurant that was open. The waiter gave us the full French wine experience, offering multiple free tastes and sharing great lessons about the Rhône wine region. It was a wonderful evening after a long day of riding.
