The End of the Road

Updated: Sep 29
Day 19 – Aubigny-sur-Nère to Bourges, France — 37 miles
Last night, we plotted today’s route and found conflicting information in our mapping apps. This usually means trouble, and today we found ourselves deep in the French countryside where the road that was supposed to be there simply wasn’t. Thankfully, it was a gorgeous morning, so we didn’t mind too much that we had to double back and basically start the ride over again.

Once we got back on a road with cellular connection, we went old school and followed the map looking for D roads—paved country roads—toward Bourges, our destination for today. The ride turned out to be a pleasant surprise as we rode through forests, farmland and vineyards. In the end, we navigated our own route, which included D roads, country dirt roads, and a brand-new bikeway leading directly into Bourges.
Bourges has a cool medieval old town, home to the Saint-Étienne Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also has stained-glass windows dating back to the 13th century. We’re looking forward to checking it out.
