It’s been about three months since we returned from our ride from Montreal to Halifax. During this time, we’ve been at our home in Portland, Oregon—a place that the President of the United States has referred to as “hell on earth.” Nothing could be further from the truth. The city is clean, eclectic, welcoming, and rich in natural beauty. I’ve spent summers in many places around the world, and Portland ranks among the best.
Most of our time has been spent connecting with family, doing training rides on our beloved Mt. Tabor, and enjoying exquisite Northwest cuisine, much of which has been creatively prepared by the best chef in Portland: my wife, Molly. It’s a good thing we’re back on the bikes, as all the delicious food and libations have led to a noticeable expansion of my belly! :)

Today marked the first day of our ride, which will take us from Vancouver, Canada, over the Canadian Rockies and into Calgary. From there, we may continue east as far as we can go before winter sets in, or we might loop back toward Portland. We’ll make that decision once we reach Calgary. It felt great to be back in Canada, enjoying the excellent cycling infrastructure and interacting with Canadians, who I believe are some of the friendliest people in the world.
Today’s ride was mostly urban and somewhat uneventful; it took almost 50 miles to reach Abbotsford, a relatively large town at the start of the Fraser Valley.
We’re excited about the journey ahead and fully aware that it will be tough, with lots of climbing, especially over the North Cascades and the Canadian Rockies. Many rides will be long, and the ascents will be unlike any we’ve faced before. This ride is dedicated to Molly’s mom, Lori, who just turned 93 years old. She’s a tenacious and beautiful person who will give us the spirit, strength and inspiration to complete the rides ahead.
Until tomorrow!
