Deeper into Autumn

Well, I must admit that getting started this morning was no easy feat. This may or may not have something to do with our absolutely wonderful four hours of bliss catching up with our good friends, Loa and Russ. It’s amazing how six years can pass, and it feels like we saw them just six days ago! Such is the magic of good friendships.

The day and road beckoned, nonetheless, and off we went, heading north. Signs of autumn are becoming more noticeable each day: the mornings are a little cooler, the sun sets a little earlier, the leaves are showing pigments normally hidden by the strong green of chlorophyll, and the late summer fruit trees carry the scent of fermenting apples, plums, and pears.
Fortunately, our route today kept us off the main highway for most of the way and deep into the countryside. I love days like today. I find myself thinking about how glorious it is to feel the warm sun on my back, see the bright blue sky, and the golden light reflecting off the lakes, and passing by the late summer farms and gardens which remind me of my childhood.

We also passed a few schools along the way. After a career in teaching (a profession I pursued with passion for 38 years!), I often wonder if I left the classroom too early, as I loved it. However, it only takes a day like today to remind me how wonderful it is to take a ride like the one we did, on a Tuesday in September. I am grateful for this opportunity and for the willingness and means to seize it.
We are slowly making our way north and closer to the Canadian Rockies. We will reach their foothills tomorrow. I feel both excited and daunted about this next phase of the ride, but I am so very happy to be taking on this challenge with Andy by my side.
