When most people find themselves on the north coast of Nova Scotia near New Glasgow or Antigonish (as we were), and want to get to Halifax, which sits on the south coast, they will most often take the Highway 102 which cuts straight from the head of the Bay of Fundy in Truro and then drive south to Halifax. Then there is the Other Way. This one is to follow the Highway 7 south from Antigonish and then drive along the coastal route south west to Halifax, a much longer way as the road winds in and out of the coves and headlands. Of course, we have opted for the road less traveled.

Our evening last night in Antigonish was once again very nice. We have found that the little town is very charming. This is most likely due to the fact that Saint Francis Xavier University is here (in fact, it seems to make up about half the town!). They have some nice eateries and a cool brewery where you can sit on top of the building right across from City Hall with views of the university. Of course we had to enjoy the view and the beers!

This morning we woke to bright sunshine and the promise of a beautiful ride across Nova Scotia. We were not disappointed. The highway 7 is really a country road with very little traffic. It cuts through gorgeous rural farmland and wooded hills. About halfway to the south shore, we rode through the most beautiful valley of Lochaber where a five-mile long lake is lined with trees, fields, and country homes. The whole place was peaceful and vibrant with the colors of nature: chlorophyll-soaked fields erupting with lupine, wild iris, wild rose, columbines, and buttercups. It was mesmerizing.

We finished the 55 mile ride today at a completely off the beaten path lodge and conference center in the middle of nowhere tucked at the end of an inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. It was built in 1960 and remains a best kept secret of Nova Scotia. I am glad we found it. I am also glad we took the road less travelled, for it has made all the difference!
